Final Project – Reading Journey

This is my final render.

In this final project, all I focus on is combining my geometric and colorful art style with the realistic objects from UE together. The result is out of my expetation since I didn’t know what it will be like at first. For the details of construction artwork and planning, you can check my post on project planning if you are interested. I also wanna explore the UE to learn new and practical skills and hope to apply them to motion graphics works in the future.

The story is mainly to express the beauty of reading. I started from building scenes first to learn how to compose and add lighting to the scenes. In the beginning, I learned UE from scratch, so I didn’t plan to create a complex 3D animation film for this term. I enjoy creating artwork in UE because it has a powerful render system, lighting, and 3D materials from Quxel Bridge.

While I was editing the video, I realized I needed more scenes to connect the stories so that the flow of the film would be smooth and in a good slow tempo. For the ending part, I added it after I finished all the scenes because it was good to see a chair jumping in the final cut to enhance the impression of the main character, which also shows that I had put effort into 3D animation lol.

In this term, I learned so much from Sera and Natalia. In class, the skills the tutor taught us are practical to use! Initially, I found it difficult to start to create something in UE because of the complicated panels of surfaces in UE5. With guidance from the tutors, I started to like to create scenes using UE5. For me, I thought UE was used in making a movie; therefore, there is a huge fear of learning this software, but Sera is so patient to teach step by step in class which helps students break the stereotype of UE. I realized it was not as difficult as we expected.

Besides, I also took one workshop for learning UE5 in LCC, which gave me a new way to compose artwork in UE5 which is to ‘add foliage’ into the scenes! ( I love flowers so much! ) The details of this experience are in this post.

For Natalia’s help, I learned so much from her assistance! She helps me to solve problems I encounter in my projects like importing animation from C4D to UE5. She will guide us step by step. She taught me how to unwrap the mesh in C4D which I never thought I could do it. Since I am very into illustration-style 3D artwork, in my final projects, she introduced me to using Adobe 3D Painter to paint textures on the model directly and export them to UE5. Anyway, big thanks to all the tutors who helped me, so that my chair finally can move!

For the final result, there is space to improve like animation haha, but I still like the slow and peaceful atmosphere in the film. It is a soooo fulfilling class. I tried my best to out of my comfort zone to learn rigging, texturing, and animating characters.

Thank you! Big cheers!!!
