Today, I read the book ” Understanding Animation.” The introduction was so triggered.
From the introduction, there is an interesting question: If the story’s so cock-eyed, then what’s the point of it? It revealed that cartoon in the past time was used to amuse people without any meaning behind the film. However, other supporters showed that Disney’s Playful Pluto, like many of the Silly Symphonies, includes sequences that fully exploit the dynamics and visual humor that are only available in animation. For me, that is true when it mentions the imagination and magic effects in a film that would impossibly be seen in reality.
At the beginning of this book, we can gain a basic idea of the history of Animation. So what is Animation?
- In Latin terms, Animate means to give life to.
- It also means the artificial creation of the illusion of movement in inanimate lines and forms.
- To give life and soul to a design, not through copying but through the transformation of reality. _ by Yugoslavia
- the animated film is concerned with metaphysical reality – not how things look, but what they mean. _ by John Halas and Joy Batchelor
The invention of the Phenakistoscope is a primary prototype of frame-by-frame animation film. ( So cool !! )

How does animation work?
This is from a theory conducted by Mark Roget. Mark Roget wrote what was later to be called the ‘Persistence of Vision’ theory. This theory determined why human beings could perceive movement. Therefore, frame-by-frame hand-drawn films are produced by many sequences in which our brain connects the visuals together.

In our first lesson, the professor introduced our outline of the program and assignment of criteria for this semester. Besides, he also recommended a book list for us.
Why do we need to have this class for animation narrative?
- In industry, many animators or producers don’t know how to articulate their ideas clearly. Narrative is an important skill in any industry.
- Think about: what do you want the reader to learn? So, pick topics precisely.
- We need to know how to tell a story. Most narratives are character-driven. So many things to consider.
Advice from the professor:
- You need to read!! But do not read everything in a book. Read the structure first.
- The more you read, the more chance that gives you more understanding and you are able to express your opinion.
- Be unbiased. We are like an inspector. We judge two sides of an issue. Both arguments should be included. Most people don’t like to argue. However, in an academic paper, it is positive.
How to modify our topic?
- Whether there is too much or less
- New issues arise in research awareness that needs to be addressed.
- Bibliography includes. ( make use of Google Scholar)
- About the thesis, the topic should be related to moving images.
