Experimental Animation
Painters/artists transform their ideas into movement as an extension of art.
In the early 1900s, as soon as the potential to manipulate multiple images was available to artists, it transformed their ideas into movement; they focused upon the formal aesthetic possibilities of film and animation, line and form, movement and rhythm, color and light.
Abstract:
- Emotionally detached/distanced from sth.
- Not aiming to depict an object.
- Not relating to concrete obj
- General principle or intellectual idea
Formative abstraction:
- Focusing upon the manipulation of the visual fundamentals: color, form, space, light, texture, dynamics of movement, time, rhythm, and sound
- The artist’s role is investigative, grounded in intellectual pursuits, without a predetermined outcome.

This is a case study that discusses color and texture.
I love this experimental film because of its pure art form and illusion of rough sketches. It visualized the idea clearly in which a circle transformed into a shape. It also uses a twice-exposed skill, creating a lovely blue imposed in the filling.
I admire this piece that employs basic shapes and vibrant colours to convey an optical poem. The artist’s fusion of music and experimental art through techniques like colour, overlap, and space produces a distinctive artistic illusion.
Why look at experimental work?
The ongoing drive for innovative and independent work in visual and film language is inspired by the boundless potential unlocked by technological advancements.
Defining experimental work
- Find systems by which we can recognise qualities, aesthetics, abstract themes and concepts.
- Analysis of the influences of new technologies, society and culture on individual works or movements.
- Identify the personal motivations of the artist.
- Demonstrate the importance of the work within both historical and modern contexts.
Viking Eggeling’s creation, ‘Symphonie Diagonale,’ represents an experimental quest to uncover the fundamental principles governing the arrangement of illusion space and dynamic visuals.
John focused on inventing a sound mechanism, while James created visual variations through extensive hand animation. This effort culminated in the 1942 film ‘Variations on a Circle,’ which achieves a genuine musical beauty, blending dynamic colour flickers with sinuous movements within circular shapes.
Trade Tattoo pushed the boundaries of experimentation with the three-color process beyond Rainbow Dance. Lye utilized the Technicolor system and drew inspiration from black and white ‘found footage’ documentaries. His intricate transformation of these images represented an unparalleled feat in film printing and color grading.

Conceptual Abstraction
Interpreting Abstraction ( Elements to Consider in Analysing and Implementing Formal Experimental Animation )
Categorisation: | Genre & Sub-genre (background/setting, mood/tone, theme or topic ) |
Form and Function: | Interpreting meaning and relating it to the format or presentational mode. -> What are the artist’s objectives and limitations? |
Process: | The techniques, materials, and technologies applied within the work and the relationships between message and medium -> Does process, design, or tool become the message? |
Formal Elements: | Use space/composition, Light & color, movement, rhythm, timing, pacing, transition, and audio relationships. -> does his work investigate these or other formal elements? |

Devices that enable animation to acceptably deviate from traditional narrative structure ( Paul Wells, Understanding Animation 1998 )
- Metamorphosis
- Condensation Sound
- Symbolism and metaphor
- Synecdoche
- Fabrication
- Associative relations
- Acting and performance
- Choreography
- Penetration
Love the style of videos that can be used in music films to express abstract ideas and emotional feelings creatively.

Jan Svankmajer, 1982, Dimensions of Dialogue
This experimental film was mixed with textures, which interestingly conveyed ideas.

Max Hattler, 2019, Serial Parallels
I love the scenes in this film that purely communicate the beauty of architecture. Of curiosity, no people are showing up in the movie; shot all about the neighborhood and windows referring to living evidence.
–
Max Hattler, 2005, Collision
I like this graphic design even though it doesn’t show any characters or human pictures; it conveys vivid ideas in a purely aesthetic way.

Max Hattler+ Hellmut Hattler, 2005 Nachtmaschine (by Max Hattler
The footage in the film overlaps many times, which implies a time-laps idea.

Pass the Ball
40 animators collaborated to create a film in which a ball is passed to someone in another country, and they pick up where you left off.
