Week 15 – Class session

Animating dialogue (Blocking)

Before diving into blocking, let’s break down the mechanics of lip sync! Lip sync, or phrasing, is a crucial aspect of animation.

Tips from video:

  • the importance of understanding timing and spacing in animation.
  • It emphasizes the role of spacing in conveying the weight, speed, and fluidity of movement.
  • Practical examples illustrate how adjusting spacing can drastically impact the overall feel and effectiveness of an animation.

Phonemes

Geo introduced phonemes to help us understand how muscles move to pronounce specific words.

Some useful video we can learn:

In this video, Anticipation involves preparing the audience for an upcoming action by first showing a smaller, opposite movement. It is crucial for creating believable and engaging animations, enhancing the viewer’s understanding and enjoyment

  • The video shows how making movements and expressions bigger and more dramatic can make animations more interesting.
  • Exaggeration helps convey ideas and emotions more clearly and makes animations more fun to watch.
  • By making things exaggerated, animators can grab the audience’s attention and tell stories more engagingly.

Keywords form this video:

  • observing real-life actions
  • the importance of using references

Planning – character’s emotion

Emotion reel: This chart teaches us different emotional expressions. It is good to check before planning, so we usually find more special terms to express the characters’ emotions.

Planning

We are told to record ourselves as a reference. This is good for observing human facial expressions.

After discussing with GEO, we decide:

  • Use a new rig that also fits the voice ( a more adult age )
  • The emotion expression could be two chasing modes, from curiosity to excitement.

Initial Plan

My initial plan is to use a boy’s rig to do the practice since I chose the audio that expresses a man going to college. However, I didn’t realize this audio sounds like an adult’s voice. I changed the rig afterwards.

The audio resource is from here.

I pick the sentence ‘ I’m officially a college student! ‘

I choose this sentence because:

  • It contains two emotions shifting from confusion to excitement
  • It resonated with my experience because I am also a student again since I worked for a while before I studied here.

Some drafts before planning.

I tried drawing some facial expressions for this lip sync practice.
